Devonleigh Tips & Tricks: Easy Indoor Gardens

One of our favourite decor techniques at Devonleigh is adding greenery and floral arrangements to different spaces. Not only do plants add a much-needed pop of colour to any home, they also improve mood and can help lung function. Talk about practical decor!
There are so many different ways to use plants and greenery to brighten up your home, and not all of these plants require extensive care. We’ll show you how to easily transform any home interior or exterior by using low maintenance florals that look great and are effortless to maintain.
Succulents
Succulents are perhaps the best indoor plants. They require very little upkeep, and they complement both modern and rustic designs. Succulents and cacti only need to be watered about once a week (when their soil is nearly bone dry), and love bright sunlight. One important care tip: succulents can in fact burn, so be careful that they aren’t being exposed to constant heat and light. In a bright sunny room should be fine, but not under direct high beaming sun.
Cacti and succulents make wonderful centerpieces, table and dresser accents, outdoor gardens, or even vertical/hanging decor. Because these plants like gritty and sandy soil, they’re somewhat easy to repot, and won’t require a large pot for growth. So simple!
Here are a few of our favourite examples of succulent and cacti designs that are easy for those of us who have less than a green thumb.

Herbs
Although these plants are a bit more delicate than succulents, they’re equally versatile. You can begin a beautiful herb garden outdoors, or you can start one right in your kitchen! One of the latest trends in indoor gardening is using a wall to create a vertical garden that doesn’t take up much room and adds vibrancy to an otherwise bare space.
To care for your herb garden, make sure that your plants receive at least eight hours of sunlight per day and are watered on a regular basis.
This might sound like typical plant maintenance, however, herbs offer much more than many indoor plants. Not only are they wonderfully fragrant, but they also offer perpetual growth. Regular clipping of the leaves encourages repeated growth, so feel free to use herbs in your cooking very generously!
Here are some of our favourite ways to create a beautiful indoor herb garden:

As a nice addition to a kitchen window sill, try growing in antique teabag tins. This adds an easy, decorative rustic charm to any kitchen.
Or if you prefer a more vertical landscape, there are endless options for herb gardens that can be mounted on a wall. Not only will this function as an indoor garden, but it can also take the place of artwork or wall decor to liven up any space.
Rustic options for vertical herb gardens might look something like these examples:

Or for more modern tastes, here are some other indoor herb gardens to complement your space. The sharp angles and streamlined wood give a clean, structured look, while the natural earthy tones of the herbs create an eye-catching focal point.

Classic Florals
If versatility is what you’re looking for, there are many classic florals that require little watering and care, and many of them can easily be transplanted from indoors to outdoors or vice versa. Don’t let the simplicity fool you - these stunning plants will look as if a professional florist arranged them.

English Ivy is perhaps one of the most versatile and recognizable plants in existence, and for good reason! It can survive indoors and outdoors, requires minimal care, and can be kept at various sizes. In fact, English Ivy is one of the best plants to purify indoor air.
African Violets are also incredibly easy to maintain, and they add wonderful vibrancy to any space. They’re one of few low light indoor plants, and since they prefer partial shade, all you’ll need to do is water them whenever the soil is dry.
Although they’re tiny, miniature potted plants can add a beautiful focal point to any window or end table. They’re a cost effective and timeless way to enhance your home decor, and they often contribute to cleaner air and enhanced mood.
With the right setting, plants can survive for months on end. No matter if you’re a beginner gardener or a master green thumb, every home can benefit from added greenery!
