Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Linen Closet
It’s spring and we’re in the mood for a little cleaning. On the docket this week - the linen closet!
Let’s face it - closets are the place where extra things end up. It’s the space for extra bedding and pillows, towels, hot water bottles, toiletries, medication, and anything else you need a home for. All too often they become a dumping ground with things thrown in at random just to get them out of the way for now and inevitably, they become lost in a sea of ‘stuff’, never to be found again.
Bringing in even a little bit of organization can help transform your linen closet into a really useable and functional storage space, and a space that you would be proud to show your house guests.
First and foremost, bringing in organization comes from first sorting through your items and putting like items together.

Try using baskets to help organize your items. Whether they’re plastic, metal, or woven, baskets really help create cohesion and order. Tip - use baskets and drawer units that are similar and are as deep as your shelves (so no wasted space).
For smaller items, place them in jars and containers. Dear Lillie does an amazing job of organizing with baskets and the jars, combining metal and glass. Everything is open and visible, making it even easier to find whatever you are looking for. For even more organization and differentiation, try labelling your shelves and boxes.
When you fold your bedding or towels, it’s always easiest when they’re folded to fit the depth of your shelves and the folded seam face outwards. This way you always know exactly what you’re grabbing at. Our personal favourite trick is folding extra sets of sheets and storing them that neatly into one of their pillow cases. No more searching around the messy linen closet for a matching set of pillowcases or sheet set because everything is all together.
When you’re setting up linen closet storage think about what you use most often and organize so what you’re most likely to need is closest at hand. Towels, linens, and pillows are typically placed on the middle shelves, while extra cleaning products can be put in baskets on the floor of the closet alongside your extra rolls of toilet paper (as no one wants to have cleaning products leak onto their clean linens). If you have small children pets, choose a place for these cleaning products that is safely out of reach.
Medicines, vaporizers, and hot water bottles should stay within arms-length - there’s very little worse than having to struggle to reach for anything when you’re feeling ill. Medicines and things that come in small boxes are much easier to find when they’re placed in drawer units.
Don’t forget about the space on the door! Attach hooks and rods for items that need long hanging space (tablecloths and robes, perhaps?) or to attach items like step-stools and ironing boards.
We hope you're inspired to tackle your linen closet. By following these tips will be well on your way to creating an organized and functional linen closet, that also looks good!
